About me

I am primarily a painter painting with oil and watercolor. I also enjoy printmaking and digital photography. Working in a variety of media offers more possibilities for expression in the creative process. While different techniques are employed in each medium, my goal is to create an image using shapes, values and colors in a unified composition to capture the essence of my subject.

When I paint, light is still the most important component. It creates the shapes, values and colors that attract me to the composition. The way I choose to capture the image on paper or canvas is usually not a planned approach but intuitive arrangement. I paint from direct observation and choose colors as pure and as close to nature as possible. I paint quickly and directly trying to capture the essence of my subject. My interest is not a photographic image but a pleasing arrangement of shapes, values and colors in the composition. I paint both in studio and plein air in and around Northeast Ohio.

Printmaking gives me opportunity to experiment with non-representational images using monoprint and stamping techniques. Color becomes secondary. Using “found objects” and arranging the inked shapes of the object on paper creates a bold image in the composition.

My digital photographs are a unique arrangement of shapes and textures images of everyday objects.

I exhibit my work both locally and regionally in juried art shows and galleries. My work was showcased for the Academy Graphic Communication, The Creative Advantage 2004 Calendar. In February, 2005, The Plain Dealer Sunday Magazine cover featured one of my sketches, an interview and a peak into the pages of my private sketchbooks. Also, one of my paintings was featured on the cover of Notre Dame Today, an alumni publication.

Thank you for visiting my website. I will continue to share my work on this site and on Instagram at artbytonifiderio.
